PANIC ATTACKS COUNSELLING
Panic attacks are a form of acute anxiety and can occur any time without an obvious trigger. Because they are unpredictable, they can be quite frightening and have strong physical symptoms. Often people feel they need to visit A&E or a doctor during or immediately after they first experience panic attacks. Many people experience them once or twice in their life. But if you have regular episodes affecting your quality of life, it is time to seek professional help.
Most attacks start without any warning and last around 5 to 20 minutes, with symptoms peaking at around 10 minutes. A worrying aspect of panic attacks is that once experienced, a person is likely be fearing the next one, creating additional stress and anxiety.
The good news is that a lot can be done to relieve panic attacks. Either a form of CBT or applied relaxation are thought to be the most effective form of panic attack counselling, alongside tailor-made coping mechanisms. Our therapists will work with you to build a picture of when and how the attacks occur. They will explore with you any negative thoughts and feelings you may have which are linked to the attacks and work with you to challenge and replace them with more realistic ones.
National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that most people will need around 7-14 hours of therapy over a 4 month period (1-2 hours per week).
